Well do you?
Do you think you have more of a Positive or more of a Negative Mindset?
I think most online marketers and entrepreneurs would say they have more of a Positive Mindset.
How about a Fixed or a Growth Mindset?
Did you know that even though you may have a Positive Mindset you may not have a Growth Mindset.
You may have a Fixed Mindset.
You say “What’s the difference, isn’t it important that I have a Positive Mindset?”
Well I thought the same until I started to read the wonderful book “Mindset – The New Psychology Of Success” by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.
Dweck studied the power of mindset and particularly the difference between a Fixed and a Growth Mindset. She explains why success is not just based on our abilities and talents, but on how we approach our goals. Either with a Fixed or growth Mindset.
I believe that your mindset is the most important factor to your SUCCESS!
Especially us online entrepreneurs who primarily work from home, by ourselves, with little or no contact with others. You need a strong mindset to keep you driving forward and taking action in the midst of adversity.
Dweck goes on to reveal what all great CEOs, athletes, teachers and parents all know, and how you can create a love for learning and a resilience which is the basis of all great accomplishment in every area of life.
So take a minute and test yourself and see if you have a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset.
Here are some example statements from Dweck’s book that will give you an idea of what mindset you possess. These questions are in the area of your personality.
Here we go…
- You are a certain kind of person, and there is not much that can be done to really change that.
- No matter what kind of person you are, you can always change substantially.
- You can do things differently, but the important parts of who you are can’t really be changed.
- You can always change basic things about the kind of person you are.
Do you know which questions were Fixed Mindset and which were Growth Mindset?
What mindset do you believe you have?
Well let’s see
If you agreed more with questions 1 and 3, then you have more of a Fixed Mindset, where questions 2 and 4 reflect a Growth Mindset.
Are you surprised at your results?
Remember that this is just in the area of your personality. You can have a different mindset regarding your intelligence, or you athletic ability and more for our focus your entrepreneur abilities.
See you can have a different type of mindset for different areas of your life. Can you see why some areas of life you may be struggling while other areas are so easy for you that you don’t even think about them.
With a Growth Mindset you are excited about challenges and trying new things. If they are hard at first or you are not good at them, then with a Growth Mindset, you don’t beat yourself up and call yourself dumb for not being good at something. You continue to learn and know that the more you learn and the more you do you will get better at it.
That’s a Growth Mindset. This will lead you to success and achieving your goals.
Now if you find yourself with a Fixed Mindset, then you will probably struggle with new or difficult things because you are of the mindset that you can’t learn, or it’s just to hard, or I am someone that just doesn’t get it, or worse, you label yourself dumb.
See with a fixed mindset you don’t feel you can grow or learn. If you don’t get it right the first time, you let that determine who you are. Say you are trying to do a challenging puzzle. If you have a Fixed Mindset you will only try it for so long before you give up.
Because with a Fixed Mindset, you figure that you haven’t figured it out yet so this puzzle is just too hard for you or you are not smart enough to solve it.
A Growth Mindset person will continue to try and though they may get frustrated at times, will continue to try new things and learn and be excited by the challenge because still trying to solve the puzzle doesn’t mean they are dumb. It doesn’t mean that they can’t do it. For people with a Growth Mindset, success is about stretching themselves, becoming smarter and becoming better at what you do!
Does this make sense?
Did you know that praising your children’s intelligence and ability doesn’t foster self-esteem and lead to your child’s accomplishment. It may actually jeopardize their success….WOW! There is something to think about.
